Alcohol addiction is quite a common disease that has affected friends, family members, or even you personally. It is a disease that lurks just below the surface and often sneaks up on you and then consuming all of life. It is a tricky disease to manage and regain control over because of alcohol’s easy access, in relation to an individual’s emotional response, which can be a deadly combination. The socialization of alcohol has made it difficult for those with addiction issues to stay clear of the drug. Many factors play into the obstacles of overcoming alcohol addiction.
The reason why alcohol is so potent is that it can override standard brain functions of human impulses and the decision-making skills. It releases a boost of dopamine while shutting down parts of the brain that are responsible for impulse control. The mind essentially becomes overwhelmed with pleasurable feelings in which leads to a desensitization of the brain then to overconsumption. Overconsumption makes the brain incapable of detecting when they have consumed too much alcohol.
Alcohol addiction and emotions can be quite tightly intertwined. There may be a problem more complex than an addict trying to overcome their problem with consumption. Alcohol can very quickly be a suppressant to more profound emotional trauma that has happened in a person’s life. This drug can help disconnect a person from the emotional trauma they once had. A possible solution to alcohol addiction is managing the emotional trauma, to the point where the alcohol is no longer needed. Genetics is another factor that plays into addiction. Even though there has not been a proven “alcohol gene,” family dynamics can influence how a child views alcohol consumption.
One factor that does not help the power of addiction is how widely available that of alcohol. It is many times the reason for social gatherings. Many feel as though they have to chose to be social or sober. Habitual cues created by an addicts brain are put to the test in a social setting that has alcohol readily available. Whether it be a wedding with an open bar, a social hour at a major conference, or a New Year’s Eve celebration with champagne, all are scenarios in which one has to be conscious of their addiction the power of the disease.
Alcoholism is a tricky tango as it marches it’s victims in different directions and because of its subtle complexity. The disease can be formed from environmental to emotional factors. Due to its extensive availability, alcohol can be one of the most tempting and deadly drugs for those suffering from addiction.
